One thing you can't really accuse the early Christians of late antiquity of is not making sufficient use of the available space. Anyone entering the burial ground beneath the former Imperial Abbey of St. Maximin is amazed at how densely stacked and stacked the stone sarcophagi are.

This cemetery fascinates all who visit it. Not only is it the only late antique burial ground north of the Alps accessible today, it is also an intense encounter with an era that suddenly, a few meters underground, seems not as far away as we previously thought.
